I have always been sensitive to air pollution, smoke, dust, pollen and other things that trigger asthma. How can I help myselfwith asthma attacks?

Do not smoke or allow smoking in your home - Babies exposed to tobacco smoke are more likely to get asthma. If a woman is exposed to tobacco smoke during pregnancy, her baby may also be more likely to get asthma.

If animal dander is a problem for you, keep your pet out of the house or at least out of your bedroom, or find it a new home.

If pollen is a problem for you, if possible, stay indoors with the air conditioner on, when the pollen count is high. Do not run the air-conditioning, whether in car or indoors, on the setting that draws in outside air and cools it. Outside air brings with it pollen, and cool, pollinated air is bad for asthma.

To control dust mites, wash your sheets, blankets, pillows, and stuffed toys once a week in hot water. You can get special dust proof covers for your mattress and pillows.

If cold air bothers you, wear a scarf over your mouth and nose in the winter.

There are a number of highly effective herbal and homeopathic remedies that may be used for the successful treatment of asthma and other respiratory conditions. Depending on the severity of the asthma, natural remedies can either reduce or completely eliminate the need for the synthetic drugs and are often used in conjunction with conventional medications as a part of a holistic treatment plan.

Herbal ingredients such as Matricaria recutita and Astralagus are known for their antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory properties, while homeopathic ingredients such as Mag. Phos. and Nat. Sulph are successful at easing chest and throat constriction and soothing mucous membranes while reducing the presence of phlegm in the chest. Used regularly, natural remedies can help improve respiratory health, reduce the incidence and severity of asthma attacks while strengthening the immune system.

You may get detailed info on the above here http://www.healthherbsandnutrition.com/remedies/a/asthma.htm

My sister lives in San Antonio, and the allergy count is really high. She has stuffy nose, red eyes, sore throat, and no fever. Is it safe to assume that she just has allergies, or is it a cold?

Yep, that’s almost assuredly "Cedar Fever". The easiest way to tell is if a lot of other people are complaining of similiar symptoms (which right now they certainly are, myself included.) Of course, there’s always a chance that it’s a cold, but if her eyes are red because they’re itchy, then that’s most likely alergies.

Allergy season is coming and my asthma will be aggravated, especially when running. Any suggestions on good cardio that I can sustain and keep up my exercise routine much appreciated. FYI: I use Advair.

Work into things slowly by building up your lungs and body. You can do any workout, but I would definetly reccommend starting with walking or swimming and getting into higher impact cardio after more training.

Also, tell your doctor what you are doing, and he/she may prescribe an inhaler (albuterol) to alleviate your problems.

I’ve heard Siberians and Maine Coons are good, THANKS!

Maine Coons? NFW, they have lots and lots of long hair. Look for rexes, as they have no undercoat and tight curly fur.

Some people (like me) are more allergic to exotic breeds like Abyssinians and Ragdolls.

And allergies do not automatically get worse over time. Your body can get accustomed to your own cat’s allergens, and thus your allergies get better.

I have asthma (minor, but still, I have it), and I’ve been told that swimming is the best thing an asmatic can do.

Why is that? I know that all arobic exercises are good for your asthma but swimming seems to be the first things people tell you is good. So, why swimming as opposed to say, jogging or biking.

I’m just curious, considering starting a regular swimming workout. Thanks.

This is for people with Asthma:

Are some kinds of exercise worse than others?
Yes.

If you take different kinds of exercise so that you use the same amount of oxygen in each one, some will cause more wheeziness or chest tightness than others. Running outdoors will in general be worse than swimming. In fact swimming is one of the best forms of exercise for people with asthma because it usually causes the least amount of chest tightness. Running indoors on a treadmill, or cycling on an indoor exercise bike will come somewhere between outdoor running and swimming.

Other factors influence the amount of worsening of your breathing which you get from a particular form of exercise. Generally for example, if the air you breathe is cold and dry, the asthma will be worse. If it is warm and moist, the asthma will be less bad. This explains why swimming generally causes less asthma than outdoor running.

You can read more about this if you follow the link below.
Hope this helps.

What about an allergy proof mattress?

you should be able to wash them like clothing without them falling apart. you should invest in a better one but it will cost more money but work better and last longer
Since I am very susceptible to the side affects of my inhaler, are there any home remedies in case it gets a little hard to breathe? I’m just talking about when my breathing is a little bit below normal capacity.
I’m looking for nonmedicated solutions, and not solutions for actual attacks, but when it feels mildly uncomfortable. I have a daily inhaler and a rescue inhaler in case of a serious attack.

Some things I do are drink small sips of hot water, caffeine (helps open the airways), and rest as much as possible.

I have really bad allergies but I’m trying to avoid taking anything for it while trying to conceive. I also want to be able to stay away from allergy meds when I get pregnant. Does anyone have any suggestions for natually dealing with allergies?

Try putting two drops of peppermint essential oil on the back of your neck twice a day. The book, Aromatherapy A to Z by Higley and Leatham indicates that some people that have used this thearapy have been able to discontinue allergy shots. It’s worked for everybody I’ve recommended it to, but none had symptoms bad enough to need shots.

The book also suggests this therapy in conjunction with a "thymus tap". This is done very simply by taking the first two fingers of your dominant hand and tapping the bones covering the thymus (located just below the "notch" on your throat).

Some sources indicate that peppermint oil should not be used during pregnancy; but if you start doing this now, you may feel much better by the time you conceive.

If your skin is sensitive to the peppermint oil, dilute it with some unscented massage oil or natural cooking oil. Do not apply prior to sun exposure, and make sure not to get the essential oil in your eyes.

Please feel free to email me with questions.

I found out that my asthma is the problem and since they have dogs, i tend to get bronchitis if i stay at their house for too long. Is there anyway to calm down bronchitis or asthma or to permantly get rid of asthma? I have an inhaler btw. What can i also do to help treat it because i have it right now.

There is no way of getting rid of asthma permenantly. If you have a preventative inhaler you can use to prevent getting ill, but it doesn’t always work. Usually if you were quite young when you first got asthma it is quite likely that you will grow out of it. Mine is definately not as bad as it used to be.
