How to help control asthma attacks..?
My fiancee has asthma attacks pretty regularly. We're getting married soon and I want to know what kinds of things I can do to make our home free of the things that cause asthma attacks. I know the basics like dust and smoke, but should we get a humidifier or are there products out there to help ease asthma symptoms? He takes meds but I just want to know what kinds of things other people have done to make it a little better!
Thanks!
They keep changing his meds because he gets them so often and they haven't been able to find something that works really well for him! So he's trying to get it under control. That's why I want to know what we can do at home to make it better!

If he is experiencing frequent attacks his asthma is not under control and he needs to return to his doctor for evaluation.
a HEPA air filter may be useful along with a hypoallergenic mattress cover and pillow
Has he had allergy testing?

There are several things he can try to help control his asthma attacks. First, make sure he knows which of his current asthma medications are controllers and which are rescuers. As an example, ventolin is a rescuer and advair is a controller.
Secondly, he should keep a diary of possible triggers, ie, writing down anything he was recently doing, eating etc. preceding an attack to see if it is allergy related, and get an allergy test.
Third, when he feels an attack coming it is important to breathe properly. In an asthma attack the problem isn't getting enough air, the problem is getting the stale air out of his lungs. He should make his lips into an 'O' like he is about to whistle and breathe out through the O slowly and regularly. This is called pursed lip breathing. Hope this helps.

No humidifier! The less humidity the better. That is why so many asthmatics move to the SOUTHWEST like Arizona and New Mexico. Pets, dust, mowing the lawn are possible triggers.
Change the filters in the furnace and AC VERY OFTEN. Don't use spray chemicals to clean your house. Change the sheets on the bed every other night with fresh clean sheets. (dust and dust mites love your bed too) Curtains, drapes and moldings should be dusted when hubby is not home and do this often. Shades might be a wiser choice and easier to keep clean and dust free. Congrats and good luck with your marriage!
