What to do about a possible food allergy?
Our APBT has allergies - she’s getting tests done in 10 days so we can figure out what it is that she’s allergic to. We’re picking up some medicine from the vet tomorrow. In the meantime, our vet advised us to try changing her food.
Is there a specific ingredient in dry dog food that causes the most allergies? Any ingredients I should avoid until I figure out what she’s allergic to?
She’s currently on Canidae All Life Stages - what should we try switching her to?
Any advice would be great.

when doing a food trial you want to pick a food that contains a novel protein: venison, duck, rabbit, bison, or fish. no chicken, beef, lamb, corn, wheat, or soy. feed that food for a minimum of 8 weeks. do not feed any other foods or treats.
food allergies are not as common as people think they are, but it cant hurt to do a food trial. also, if your dog has ever had steroids for her allergies and responded to them she more than likely has environmental allergies and not food allergies.

Our vet told us that corn and its byproducts was the number one suspect when considering food allergies. Our chihuahua and his son, a chihuahua pekingese mix were having severe itching problems. We have since changed to a lamb & rice formula. It looks like daddy is doing better but son is still having major problems; he just started an allergy medication yesterday. One of the other answers said to look out for environmental allergens; this is good advice - it may not be a food allergy. Hope you find and fix the problem.

I believe Canidae just changed their formulation. So that may be the cause. I had a dog with food allergies and I started out by using a food with as few ingredients as I could find such as fish and potato. I agree the protein needs to be from a source you have not used before such as venison, salmon, ostrich, etc. I also did not use a grain for starch, eliminating barley, corn, etc. Potatoes or peas were a good substitue for my dog. I allowed a 6-8 week trial before seeing results. Just my thoughts. Good luck

If your dog has allergies I would stick with a grain free all natural food. There are a lot out there. I would also go for a more exotic meat such as fish (whitefish, herring), venison, or bison. This will really help your dog. I highly recommend Wellness Core Ocean flavor or Taste of The Wild, there are 3 different flavors. You can check them out on their websites or look at them through http://www.wagnwash.com.

I work at Wag N Wash Healthy Pet Center and this is what I recommend to people with dogs that have allergies. Natural is just way better for any animal and grain free is best for dogs with allergies.

Wow-allergies with Canidae All Stages…..hmmmm,food allergies are hard to pinpoint sometimes. Food allergy testing often gives false positives too. My vet won’t do food allergy testing simply because of the high instance of false positives. I would change to a food that has a single source of protien different from that you are feeding now along with no corn, soy ,wheat or rice since Canidae uses rice.
It may take 2-3 weeks for a difference to be seen since it takes a while for the body to completely rid the system of allergens. Good luck

The most common culprit of dog food allergies are wheat, corn, soy, and glutens. I am surprised to hear your dog may be reacting to Canidae because this is supposed to be one of the good brands without the above mentioned ingredients. However, I did hear they recently changed their formula.
I would recommend your trying Wellness Core. It is a high quality, grain-free formula with wholesome ingredients and good protein. No fillers, by-products, corn, soy, or wheat. Also no artificial, cancer-causing preservatives like BHA, BHT and ethoxyquin.

I have a Siberian Husky who is allergic to all types of grain, including oats. She is also allergic to fish. What I would do is look at the Canidae ingredient list, and try and find something that does not have those main ingredients. Canidea all stages is poultry based, so I would switch to a kibble that has rabbit, venison, or bison as its primary ingredient. Fish will probably work too, but I would try one of the other meats first.
Nature’s Variety Instinct has a good grain-free, high protein, rabbit based kibble.

We adopted a Irish Wolfhound mix who also had major allergies… the vet put him on meds and changed his food to one with no corn or wheat, but it still occured. Finally someone recommended INNOVA brand EVO dry dog food… within days there was a HUGE difference - and no meds needed. Now after 8 months of being on it he has NO issues. It is completely grain-free!
We use the orange bag: EVO Turkey Large bites. It is hard to find, but well worth it! I have the link below to the brand site.
