What are the best cats for allergy sufferers?

February 22nd, 2010 -- Posted in Allergy | 3 Comments »

I have mild allergies, but love cats and have heard there are breeds that are better for allergy sufferers than others. Which are the best breeds for this?

I’ve heard Siberians and Maine Coons are good, THANKS!

Maine Coons? NFW, they have lots and lots of long hair. Look for rexes, as they have no undercoat and tight curly fur.

Some people (like me) are more allergic to exotic breeds like Abyssinians and Ragdolls.

And allergies do not automatically get worse over time. Your body can get accustomed to your own cat’s allergens, and thus your allergies get better.

How is it that swimming is good for asthma?

February 22nd, 2010 -- Posted in Asthma | 5 Comments »

I have asthma (minor, but still, I have it), and I’ve been told that swimming is the best thing an asmatic can do.

Why is that? I know that all arobic exercises are good for your asthma but swimming seems to be the first things people tell you is good. So, why swimming as opposed to say, jogging or biking.

I’m just curious, considering starting a regular swimming workout. Thanks.

This is for people with Asthma:

Are some kinds of exercise worse than others?
Yes.

If you take different kinds of exercise so that you use the same amount of oxygen in each one, some will cause more wheeziness or chest tightness than others. Running outdoors will in general be worse than swimming. In fact swimming is one of the best forms of exercise for people with asthma because it usually causes the least amount of chest tightness. Running indoors on a treadmill, or cycling on an indoor exercise bike will come somewhere between outdoor running and swimming.

Other factors influence the amount of worsening of your breathing which you get from a particular form of exercise. Generally for example, if the air you breathe is cold and dry, the asthma will be worse. If it is warm and moist, the asthma will be less bad. This explains why swimming generally causes less asthma than outdoor running.

Hope this helps.

How do i clean my bed and pillow allergy covers?

February 15th, 2010 -- Posted in Allergy | 1 Comment »

I’ve done my homework on dustmite allergies but i still cant figure out how and when to clean my allergy covers. I bought some from walmart 2 months ago. Moreover, i washed them like i wash clothing but they began to thin and rip. How do you clean them and can anyone recommend allergy covers? Thank You. What about an allergy proof mattress?

you should be able to wash them like clothing without them falling apart. you should invest in a better one but it will cost more money but work better and last longer

What are some home remedies to relieve asthma symptoms?

February 15th, 2010 -- Posted in Asthma | 3 Comments »

I have recently been diagnosed with asthma. Since I am very susceptible to the side affects of my inhaler, are there any home remedies in case it gets a little hard to breathe? I’m just talking about when my breathing is a little bit below normal capacity.
I’m looking for nonmedicated solutions, and not solutions for actual attacks, but when it feels mildly uncomfortable. I have a daily inhaler and a rescue inhaler in case of a serious attack.

Some things I do are drink small sips of hot water, caffeine (helps open the airways), and rest as much as possible.

How can I get natural allergy relief while trying to conceive or pregnancy?

February 12th, 2010 -- Posted in Allergy | 7 Comments »

I have really bad allergies but I’m trying to avoid taking anything for it while trying to conceive. I also want to be able to stay away from allergy meds when I get pregnant. Does anyone have any suggestions for natually dealing with allergies?

Try putting two drops of peppermint essential oil on the back of your neck twice a day. The book, Aromatherapy A to Z by Higley and Leatham indicates that some people that have used this thearapy have been able to discontinue allergy shots. It’s worked for everybody I’ve recommended it to, but none had symptoms bad enough to need shots.

The book also suggests this therapy in conjunction with a "thymus tap". This is done very simply by taking the first two fingers of your dominant hand and tapping the bones covering the thymus (located just below the "notch" on your throat).

Some sources indicate that peppermint oil should not be used during pregnancy; but if you start doing this now, you may feel much better by the time you conceive.

If your skin is sensitive to the peppermint oil, dilute it with some unscented massage oil or natural cooking oil. Do not apply prior to sun exposure, and make sure not to get the essential oil in your eyes.

Please feel free to email me with questions.

How do you get rid of Asthma or Bronchitis?

February 12th, 2010 -- Posted in Asthma | 1 Comment »

Everytime i sleep over at my friends house, I get bronchitis for about 3-4 weeks. I found out that my asthma is the problem and since they have dogs, i tend to get bronchitis if i stay at their house for too long. Is there anyway to calm down bronchitis or asthma or to permantly get rid of asthma? I have an inhaler btw. What can i also do to help treat it because i have it right now.

There is no way of getting rid of asthma permenantly. If you have a preventative inhaler you can use to prevent getting ill, but it doesn’t always work. Usually if you were quite young when you first got asthma it is quite likely that you will grow out of it. Mine is definately not as bad as it used to be.

What are better ways of controlling my asthma?

I have horrible asthma, but I like to go to the gym and run/work out. It’s hard though because my chest ends up hurting and I start wheezing before it can really do much for me LOL. I take advair and I have an albuterol inhaler that I carry around with me, but is there anything else a doctor could do for me? A surgical procedure maybe?

There are no surgical procedures for asthma. The Advair might be making your asthma worse, when I took it that happened to me. Something to do with one of the ingredients called Salmeterol. Talk to your doctor and see if you should change medications, something like Symbicort, Qvar, Singulair, etc.
